Juan and Sophia, 12 year old twins in southern Colorado learn that they are the latest in a series of heirs to an ancient silver medallion which holds a great secret. Adzul, the first book in the series, is the story of their ancestor who first comes into possession of the medallion and risks his life to save it.

Adzul, the new book by David Sage is a captivating story told by a great story-teller. As the first-novel effort by a master of the art of in-person storytelling, it is a very tightly written and historically accurate novel that is well worth reading, particularly at Amazon’s reasonable prices. The author’s use of words and language are particularly well executed for a first novel, while being easily read by the young adult audience that it is directed to. This is a very enjoyable and entertaining read for both young readers and adults. You can’t go wrong giving this to the young readers in your family.

When I was growing up, I loved reading books that placed the central characters in detailed environments which were historically accurate. Not fact-heavy “historical novels” portraying figures from history, but rather, detailed and authentic portrayals of exciting characters who had adventures in historically significant times. These thrilling stories set in the past triggered my deep desire to know history and have nourished that enthusiasm for many years.

For example, I spent many hours enthralled by the young-adult novels of Rosemary Sutcliffe… spell-binding adventures involving wonderful characters which were set in Britain and Scotland during their conquest by the Roman Empire. After reading Sutcliffe novels I wanted to know more about the expansion of the Roman Empire, the people it conquered and the reasons for its fall. These books were a great way to learn accurate history, world events and ancient cultures indirectly (almost by osmosis) while immersed in a great story with characters I could relate to.

That is the “flavor” of Adzul. It is a story of exciting adventure about a compelling character who lives in a very important historical context, the fall of the Incan Empire to the Spanish Conquistadors. The story has a historically accurate setting and is told with highly authentic details (like its description of the deadly use of stone slings by the warriors of the Inca). The way that the tense and perilous story of Adzul, an Inca warrior, is interwoven with a parallel story involving his ancestors in modern Colorado is very well done. It reveals how we are all the product of the “history” of our own ancestors.

This novel is a perfect book for kids who are learning about the history of the western hemisphere, the civilizations of South and Central America, and the Spanish conquest of the “new world.” Through an exciting story the book discloses how the settling of early America is tied into the earlier history of South America and Central America. This is a perfect novel for teachers to recommend or assign to their students as they study American History or the settling of the new world.

I can recommend Adzul to you without any reservation. Read it for yourself, and give it to any young reader in your family. It is a wonderful story, and a good read. The only reason that I did not give the book 5 stars is that I wanted more depth to the central characters, more emotional empathy, more descriptive details of their lives. I like to “live in” the head of the characters as I read a book, and it was not quite “there” for me on that score yet. I wanted my review to allow growth from a very good story to a “great book” as the series expands.

Given the author’s storytelling mastery, the wonderful concept for this series, and the excellence of his first episode, I have a feeling that the next installment of the series will be even better and will “knock our sox off.”

I look forward to the next installment.

Adzul The Heirs of the Medallion Book 1 edition by David Sage Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A terrific book! Going back and forth from modern Colorado to the Ancient Indian nations of the Incas and Aztec, David Sage weaves a wonderful tale of mystery. This would make a terrific movie- and I can't wait until Book Two!
This book takes the reader on an epic adventure across time and continents. Adzul is the first in a series by an author who is renown for spinning stories for children of all ages.
My son (10) is really enjoying this book as are his parents. Dave Sages stories have sparked imagination and wonder for decades and now finally there is no limit to the children he will reach. You are in for a treat with Azuel and his epic adventure. "it's like a grandpa is right there telling the story." According to my son.
My son and I enjoyed this so much! It kept us wanting more after each chapter. It was exciting and adventurous, just perfect for the 10-14 year old, but I enjoyed it too.
I hope there will be a sequel soon!
My 2 kids love this author. The 13 y/o read to the 10 year old to start, and I followed along as well. One of those books the kids just can't put down until it's done.
An adventure story for families to read together and a book for children to read alone. I really enjoy this first book of the series. Pick it up for yourself, your family or your child. Looking forward to reading Book Two! If you and your family like adventure, this book is for you.
Although this book is for tweens, my husband and I both found it to be very engaging, well crafted and a great story. I really like the short chapters. They make this a wonderful book to read aloud, and keep kids interested in both story lines.
